Porpoise Bay would have to be one of my most favorite places on the planet…. isolated, windswept, wild and incredibly beautiful.

Just around the corner from Porpoise Bay is Curio Bay …..families of yellow eyed penguins(endangered) make their home here. We were lucky enough to see them but unfortunately too dark to take pictures. The bay itself is a remnant of petrified forest as well as the home to colonies of bull kelp.

Sunset at the back of curio bay……across emerald green paddocks.

And sheep around the corner….
A truly beautiful place.
The Catlins would have to be one of my favorite places……beautiful bush, amazing rugged coastlines, isolated, windswept and incredibly beautiful…..

Porpoise bay….named after a small dolphin that frequents this bay sometimes known as hectors dolphin. We didn’t have the pleasure of seeing them this trip.

The view from the front window of our bach overlooking the bay……

Around the corner is Curio bay which is the remnants of a very old petrefied rainforest…there are large beds of bull kelp and it is the home of the rare yellow eyed penguin. We were lucky to see them, but unfortunately it was too dark for photos.

Fascinating and beautiful……..
On the way south from Milford sound late afternoon and no wind ……zoom in on the sign, might have to squint a bit …true New Zealand humour!! As is the scenery…….

The place felt serene and surreal full of the magic of nature in all her glory : ))
Taken with my phone ……camera battery had run down…..
A walk along the kepler track just outside of Te Anau took us through this beautiful beech forest……. the track following the edge of the lake.
Looking north over lake te anau towards milford and the southern alps….
A little community nestled into the dense moss…

We had a window of opportunity to see and explore the mountains of southern new zealand. We headed south and west from Dunedin. Snow topped mountains if you look real close, otherwise landscapes that are deeply green with the odd tussock thrown in , oh yes and some cows, sheep and braided rivers.

Its intensely cold …..7ºcelsius daytime temperature brrrrrr!!

The hillsides are morraines and covered in red tussock grass.
To be continued….: ))

Last year I visited some dear friends of mine in Kalimantan. This was my room at their house….. many fond memories….

Another room another place in kalimantan….. someone’s kitchen where we were invited to learn how to make coffee the kalimantan way.

Down towards the antartic near the bottom of the south island is a small valley tucked away on the edge of Dunedin harbour. My brother’s house is perched on a steep hillside

Just down the hill from the house is a railway track running through the valley…. not too many trains, tho in the dark of night they rumble along with huge long loads of containers carrying them off to who knows where.

The roads up into the valley are steep and narrow….. the houses picturesque, the vegetation lush, luxuriant and mostly green.

The views of the harbour in constant flux…..

All in all a very fine day for a brisk walk …….with lots of gazing out into the harbour mostly to catch one’s breath!!!
